About Us
What is Round Table?
Round Table is basically a worldwide organisation of young men’s clubs. Individual clubs (or ‘Tables’) meet once a fortnight for social or sporting activities, and also to plan local fundraising and community projects. We are right on your doorstep: virtually every town in Britain has a Round Table club, and some towns and cities have more than one. Although we are an all male organisation, we operate alongside our sister organisation, Circle, membership of which is only open to women (more details at www.ladies-circle.org.uk).
Round Table was started in Norwich, England, in 1927. Since then over 1,200 individual Round Table clubs have been chartered throughout the UK. Brackley & District Round Table is number 1,037 and was chartered (started) in 1971.
The Round Table movement has grown overseas too with about 70,000 members worldwide. Not just in Britain, but in 70 countries around the globe - from the Arab Emirates and Austria through to Zambia and Zimbabwe - young men have found that Round Table is all about making friends, having fun, and putting that fun into fundraising activities within the local community. We are a non-party political, non-racial, non-denominational and non-sectarian organisation. Round Table is not a ‘secret society’, nor does it involve any rolled up trouser-legs or funny handshakes. Membership of our wonderful association cuts right across geographical, language and cultural barriers.
What is Brackley Round Table? Brackley & District Round Table currently has 14 members, ranging in age from 28 to 45 years. Some of our members are ‘native’ to the Brackley area, while others have settled here more recently. Some of us work locally and some further afield, while some travel the UK and abroad on business. But we all try to make it back to Brackley every other Monday evening for Round Table! We arrange a varied programme of events well in advance; the cost of each meeting varies but we budget our activities so that during the year we spend on average about £10 per event, and this always includes a meal of some kind. The activities we get involved in really are many and various: here’s just a selection: karting, laser quest, 5-a-side football, archery, 10-pin bowling, gliding, brewery tour, punting, golf, PlayStation on the big screen, quizzes, off-roading, guest speakers, guided tours and other trips … etc. We also meet to discuss Round Table business and administration as well as to plan or review our fundraising and community service activities. Despite our active social life, we do consider our community projects to be an important part of our activities. Recent initiatives have included building a patio for a disabled young woman and bringing Father Christmas to see local children, annual as well as our annual involvement with Brackey Carnival. In most cases, these projects need to be financed, so we undertake various fundraising activities to generate the cash; it usually comes from donations from the public and sometimes from corporate sponsorship. In addition to our annual Christmas collection, more novel ways of raising money have included operating a human fruit machine and a sponsored 24 hour rally around the UK’s 12 major toll bridges. Each year Round Tables across the length and breadth of RTBI raise well over ten million pounds for good causes. Brackley Round Table has already planned for this summer a sponsored ‘fire-walking’ event and a charity beer festival. As well as the local fortnightly meetings and events put on by the club, we also attend are also Area, National, and International Round Table events. Tablers’ partners and families and other guests are welcome at many of these. Recent family events include a ramble, treasure hunt, camping weekend, and children’s Christmas party, while there are plenty of dinners, dances, discos and parties for couples too. If you aspire to join the best young men’s club in the world, then find out more on this website. Don’t make a decision until you’ve come along to a few of our events. Fun, friends, fundraising, community service, personal development, international travel, business skills, networking. You want it? We’ve got it! |
